COMMUNITY KEYS, Providence, RI, 2019

What communities are there in Rhode Island? Who belongs there? Where do they live ? Do they know each other?  The project was done as a part of Public Art class I was taking from Brown University at the time. I was thinking about the sense of belonging to a certain community and reflecting on what communities are around me after I moved to Rhode Island. For this work I chose a key as a symbol of community, home, belonging and acceptance. I collected over 400 old used keys from people of Rhode Island, it let me find out who my neighbours are, who lives around me and talk to people from deferent public institution as well as many small businesses. The keys were accumulated by setting up donation boxed, by calling/sending letter to people in different neighbourhoods, by visiting estate sales and many other ways. And one clod December day I decided to show the keys to people of Providence...

We collected old keys at the following locations
